Countries of the Region Expect to Conclude Negotiations of Regional Agreement on Environmental Matters in Costa Rica

The ninth meeting on Principle 10 will be held from February 28 to March 4 in San Jose and will feature the participation of the country’s President, Luis Guillermo Solís, and ECLAC’s Executive Secretary, Alicia Bárcena.

Government delegates from the countries in Latin America and the Caribbean that are negotiating a regional agreement regarding access to environmental information, participation and justice (Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development) will meet in San Jose, Costa Rica, to conclude the negotiations on this legal instrument, the first of its kind in the region.

The Ninth Meeting of the Negotiating Committee of the Regional Agreement on Principle 10 will take place from February 28 to March 4 in the Hotel Real Intercontinental of the Costa Rican capital. It will be inaugurated on Wednesday, February 28 at 9 a.m. by Joseluis Samaniego, Director of the Sustainable Development and Human Settlements Division of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC); Edgar Gutiérrez, Costa Rica’s Minister of Environment and Energy; Miguel Ángel González, Chilean Ambassador in Costa Rica; and representatives of the public.

The gathering will come to a close on Sunday, March 4 with a high-level session in which Costa Rican President Luis Guillermo Solís will participate, along with Alejandro Solano Ortiz, Costa Rican Viceminister of Foreign Relations and Worship and Alicia Bárcena, ECLAC’s Executive Secretary.

At this ninth meeting, the delegates and representatives of the public will examine the matters that are pending with the expectation of adopting the regional agreement. The process, initiated at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), is presided jointly by Costa Rica and Chile, with the support of ECLAC as the Technical Secretariat.

Members of the media are invited to attend this gathering. Journalists are not requested to accreditate with anticipation, but must carry their media credentials or their identity documents with them to gain entry.
